Some of the lovely ladies on this list will be worth just as much after they hang up the sulky but in the meantime, they’ve collectively been doing some amazing things on the race track.
It’s always been difficult to overcome the great entires who go onto become stallions or rugged open class geldings but there are more than a few mares who can hold their own with any horse on any race track.
Including fillies has made this list much trickier so a couple of the inclusions are as much about what we expect those horses to do as much as what they have already achieved.
Anyhow, enough rambling and reasoning, here goes;
1 DREAM ABOUT ME – Purdon-Rasmussen (Bettor’s Delight x Splendid Dreams, $1m)
An elite age-restricted performer and a consistent competitor in all the big races as an older mare. 35 times placed from 39 races. Nine Group 1 wins among her 15 victories at group level. She may be declining ever so slightly but someone needs to take her crown.
2 TELL ME TALES – Emma Stewart (Tell All x Soaring Franco, $237k)
A personal favourite, this girl could be anything. She’s fast, strong and can sustain her high speed. The Emma Stewart protege has won 15 from 20 and peeled off nine straight last season. Only injury has stood between her and greatness..
3 ELLE MAC – Purdon-Rasmussen (Bettor’s Delight x Goodlookinggirl, $520k)
A five-time Group 1 winner makes any list of top performers and her recent form suggest she may actually be improving again as a mare. Her 1:51.6 victory over the mile when posted three-wide was truly stunning. She’s en route for the Ladyship Mile in Sydney.
4 UTMOST DELIGHT – Steven Reid (Bettor’s Delight x Victor Supreme, $234k)
A relative unknown to most Aussies, she will look to take Oz by storm in the Group 1 mares races. Collected a Jewel as a four-year-old and another Group 1 at three. Is the current favourite for the Ladyship Cup on January 26.
5 SPEAK NO EVIL – Emma Stewart (Well Said x Top Tempo, $244k)
A ‘veteran’ of 15 starts, she announced herself by winning the VicBred Final and Breeders Crown. Yet to resume as a four-year-old but when racing will be contesting the best mares races.
6 PRINCESS TIFFANY – Purdon-Rasmussen (Art Major x Dancing Diamonds, $370k)
Her rookie season was magical. Nine races, nine wins. Three Group 1’s, including a breathtaking Breeders Crown win from the death. Has the injury bug struck ?
7 CARLAS PIXEL – Dean Braun (Courage Under Fire x Pixel Perfect, $415k)
A demon over the shorter trips, she’s developed enough stamina to be competitive in some of the distance contests, too. Ran a tremendous third in Victoria Cup but career highlight was winning the 2018 Ladyship Mile, rating 1:49.5.
8 SOHO BURNING LOVE – Michael Stanley (Auckland Reactor x Soho Bordeaux, $186k)
Exploded onto the scene entering her three-year-old season. Explosive speed and loves to roll along in front. Went 1:52.6 at Melton on New Year’s Eve 2017. Runner-up in NSW Oaks, VicBred Final, Bathurst Gold Bracelet and third in Victoria Oaks. Deserves Group 1 glory.
9 SHARE THE ROAD – Laura Crossland (Tintin In America x High Tops Hanover, $61k)
She’s lightly raced and only has 61k behind her but many are predicting an enormous future for this mare. Her best win was arguably a Group 3 upset over General Dodge. Was unlucky when running home hard in recent Cobram Cup.
10 DELIGHT ME – Emma Stewart (Bettor’s Delight x Cornsilk, $223k)
Her VicBred Final win had to be seen to be believed. Since then, injury has been persistent. She resumed from a 15-month layoff with a 1:52.3 mile at Melton but has been three times since from four runs.
Next in line; Kualoa, Wainui Creek, Belle of Montana, Cheesy Fingers, Soho Nolita, Village Witch.
